@-MAILING

Direct mailing has long established itself as the number one promotional tool in below the line advertising. We don't need to explain why here. You are well aware of the reasons.

But still, to set up a good mailing implies a lot of costs. Lay-out work, printing, postage, envelopes... It soon gnaws at your budgets. So you are limited in the number of mailings you can send. Which keeps the medium mainly 'below the line'.

Mailing over the internet is quite a different matter. Sure, there is still a little lay-out work to do, if you want to send a graphical mailing. But there is no postage, no handling cost, no printing cost... In fact, practically no variable cost at all.

And there is more to be said in favour of @-mailings. For starters, there is no sending delay. If you send out your mailing on tuesday morning, your addressee receives it on tuesday morning.

Then there is the interactivity. With one mouse-click, your customer can contact you for more information, or he can go to your website for more information on the topic at hand. Or to place his order in your online-shop.

Since there is no postage or printing cost, there is no limit to the number of mailings you can send out. So @-mailing becomes a feasable tool for above-the-line promotion too!

Are there no inconvenients then? Of course there are. There are some rules to be respected when you send out an @-mailing. Always respect the 'netiquette'. Some people just don't like to be flooded with commercial mailings they didn't ask for, and they could brand you as a 'spammer' if you don't pay attention. So you have to provide a number of tools in your mailing to e.g. unsubscribe from your list.

Then there is the problem of the mailreader. How your mailing appears on the screen of your addressee depends on the device he uses. Is it html-enabled or not? Does he read his mails on a normal computer, with a modern mail-handler? Or does he read it on his WAP-cellular or PDA? We advise to send two simultanuous versions of your mailing: one in html, with all the graphical elements you like, and another underlying one in flat text. If sent with the right software, his device will automatically choose the best version, and he will always be able to read your message.
